How to use Deflekt

1. Introduction

Deflekt has two main features: Create Set which allows you to create and play sound sets, and Play a Playlist which enables playing sets in any desired order.

2. Create Set

You can combine tone and beat sound sources to create vibrations. These combinations can be saved as sets and loaded from the Set Management. "Create Set" has the following functions:

  • Add sound sources.
  • Change the position of the sound source to adjust the left-right volume balance.
  • Play and stop the sound source.
  • Display the Set Screen to create, delete, or rearrange sets.

  • Preference button

    Displays the Preference, which includes Timer Settings, In-App Purchases, Privacy Policy, and Terms of Use.

  • Tone Sound Source

    Tap: Display the Tone Sound Source Setting to change the timbre.
    Drag: Change the position of the tone sound source to adjust the left-right volume balance. Dragging to the left increases the left volume and decreases the right volume. Dragging to the right increases the right volume and decreases the left volume. The vertical position does not affect the volume.

  • Beat Sound Source

    Tap: Display the Beat Sound Source Setting to change the rhythm.
    Drag: Change the position of the beat sound source to adjust the left-right volume balance. The vertical position does not affect the volume.

  • Play a Playlist button

    Go to the Play a Playlist.

  • Set button

    Tap the Set button to display the Set Management where you can create, delete, or load sets. The name of the selected set is displayed to the right of the set button.

  • Tone Sound Souce Add button

    Add a Tone sound source.The maximum number of sound sources that can be added is 8, including beat sound sources.

  • Beat Sound Souce Add button

    Add a Beat sound source.The maximum number of sound sources that can be added is 8, including tone sound sources.

  • Play/Stop button

    Play the sounds of the Tone and Beat sound sources.

3. Tone Sound Source Setting

On this screen, you can use carrier and modulator waves to create basic sounds. You can also fine-tune the timbre with harmonic adjustments and make final volume adjustments. In addition, it is possible to enable sound quality correction with the equalizer. Furthermore, by using the sequence function, you can program patterns where the sound turns on and off along the timeline. This allows for more complex and dynamic sound expressions, not just sustained tones.

1Delete / Close

  • Deletes the selected Tone source.

  • Close the Tone sound source settings panel.

2Carrier

Sets the carrier wave for the sound.

  • 2-1Carrier Signal

    Set the frequency of the carrier wave, which determines the basic pitch of the sound. Increasing the value raises the pitch, while decreasing it lowers the pitch.
    Setting the carrier frequency below 1Hz produces a tremolo effect, where the volume pulsates, creating a deep, throbbing "woom-woom" sound.

  • How to adjust the carrier wave

    • You can enter the frequency using the on-screen keyboard by tapping the frequency display field.

    • When you tap the minus button, the frequency decreases and the pitch becomes lower. If you keep holding the button, the value decreases more rapidly.
    • You can adjust the carrier wave frequency by moving the slider thumb. Dragging the thumb to the left decreases the frequency and lowers the pitch. Dragging it to the right increases the frequency and raises the pitch.
    • When you tap the plus button, the frequency increases and the pitch becomes higher. If you keep holding the button, the value increases more rapidly.

  • 2-2Phase

    Adjust the starting timing of the carrier wave. Changes to this parameter alone may not be easily noticeable, but when combined with the modulator wave described later, it can change the way the waveforms overlap, subtly affecting the attack and timbre. 0.00 usually represents the standard starting point of the waveform.

3Modulator

Modulates the carrier wave. This allows for the creation of timbres with complex harmonics that cannot be achieved with a simple carrier wave.

  • 3-1Modulator frequency

    Controls the frequency of the modulator. At low frequencies, this creates a vibrato effect. At high frequencies, it generates rich harmonics that alter the timbre.

  • 3-2Phase

    Adjusts the starting phase of the modulator. Similar to the carrier's phase, this shifts when the modulation begins, subtly altering the timbre and character of the sound.

4Overtones

Adjust specific overtone components contained in the timbre.

Turning on the “2nd,” “3rd,” “4th,” “5th,” or “6th” buttons emphasizes the corresponding overtones—2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 6x the base frequency. Emphasizing the “2nd” (one octave above) makes the sound fuller. Adding the “3rd” creates a richer and more complex tone. Higher overtones like the “5th” or “6th” can make the sound brighter, sharper, or more metallic.

5Volume

Set the volume of this tone sound source.

6Channel Equalizer

This is a 3-band channel equalizer for adjusting the timbre. It divides the sound into three frequency bands (high, mid, low) and adjusts the amplification of each band.
Using the equalizer, you can suppress specific harsh resonances and adjust the dynamics of the vibrations.

High Frequency Adjustment

  • High Frequency Band
    Select the center frequency of the high range between 3350Hz and 10000Hz. Moving the slider to the right targets higher frequencies.
  • High Frequency Volume
    Adjusts the volume of the selected high frequency band. Move the slider to the right (+10dB) to boost the highs, or to the left (–10dB) to cut them.

Mid Frequency Adjustment

  • Mid Frequency Band
    Select the center frequency of the midrange between 150Hz and 3500Hz. This range strongly affects presence, texture, and clarity.
  • Mid Frequency Volume
    Adjusts the volume of the selected midrange band. Moving right (+10dB) brings the sound forward or emphasizes attack. Moving left (–10dB) reduces muddiness or nasal tones.

Low Frequency Adjustment

  • Low Frequency Band
    Select the center frequency of the low range between 30Hz and 150Hz.
  • Low Frequency Volume
    Adjusts the volume of the selected low frequency band. Moving the slider to the right (+10dB) increases vibration. Moving it to the left (–10dB) decreases it.

Sequence
Resets the frequency band and volume settings to their default values.

6Sequence

Create patterns that control the sound's on/off state over time.

Step Settings

  • On/Off Switch
    Select whether each step plays a sound. When set to “On,” the sound plays. When set to “Off,” it stays silent. By combining these, you can create rhythmic patterns or intentional gaps.
  • Tap the minus button to decrease the duration time.
  • Duration (s)
    Set how long each step stays in its On or Off state, in seconds. For example, setting On to 2000 milliseconds and Off to 1000 milliseconds creates a pattern of “2 seconds of sound, 1 second of silence.” Adjusting step durations lets you shape the rhythm and length of the pattern.
  • Tap the plus button to inclease the duration time.

Reset the sequence settings to the default state.

After the playback starts, the sound of this tone sound source will play for 5 milliseconds, then be silent for 10 milliseconds, followed by sound for 15 milliseconds, then silence for 20 milliseconds, before returning to the start and repeating the process.

4. Beat Sound Source Setting

You can create your own rhythm patterns with the step sequencer and finely adjust the speed, timing, volume, pitch, length, decay, and distortion of the sounds played in those patterns. The rhythmic vibrations occupy the body's senses, allowing the brain and mind to regain space from preoccupation with other thoughts, allowing you to focus on the present situation. It explains how each parameter affects the sound.

1Delete / Close

Beat Screen

  • Deletes the selected Beat source.

  • Close the Beat sound source settings panel.

2Step sequencer

The buttons numbered 1 to 16 at the top of the screen are the step sequencer. They are used to create 16-step rhythm patterns.

Using the Step sequencer:

  • By tapping the buttons from 1 to 16, you can toggle each step on or off.
  • A button displayed in black indicates the “On” state, and the assigned sound will be played at that timing.
  • A button displayed in white indicates the “Off” state, and no sound will be played at that timing.

For example, if you turn on only steps 1, 5, 9, and 13, it will create a basic four-on-the-floor rhythm: “boom, boom, boom, boom.”

2-1Tempo

Set the speed of the sequence.

How to adjust the Tempo

  • Tap the tempo display to enter a value using the on-screen keyboard.
  • Tap the minus button to decrease the carrier wave cycle. This lowers the pitch. Holding the button continuously reduces the value further.
  • Move the slider thumb to adjust the carrier wave cycle. Dragging it left shortens the cycle and lowers the pitch. Dragging it right lengthens the cycle and raises the pitch.
  • Tap the plus button to increase the cycle, raising the pitch. Holding the button continuously increases the value further.

Sound Changes:

  • Smaller values (shorter ms): The sequence plays faster. The beat speeds up.
  • Larger values (longer ms): The sequence plays slower. The beat slows down.

2-2StartDelay time

Sets the delay time from when playback starts until the sequence begins.

Effect on Sound:

  • Increase the value: The silent time before the sequence starts playing after pressing the play button becomes longer.
  • Decrease the value (closer to 0): The sequence starts playing immediately after pressing the play button.

2-3 Interval time

Set the time between 16 and 1 on the step sequencer.

Effect on Sound:

  • Increase the value: The time between playing 16 and playing 1 becomes longer.
  • Set the value to 0: The time between playing 16 and playing 1 matches the time set by the Tempo.

3Vibrations

Set the strength of the vibrations.

4Pitch

Set the pitch of the sound to be played.

Effect on Sound:

  • Increase the value: The pitch of the sound becomes higher.
  • Decrease the value: The pitch of the sound becomes lower.

5Hold

Related to the time the sound sustains at maximum level. Adjusts the length (sustain) after the sound's attack.

Effect on Sound:

  • Increase the value: The time before the sound starts to decay after it begins playing becomes longer, giving the impression of a sustained or "stretched" sound. It creates a legato-like, connected sound impression.
  • Decrease the value: The sound starts to decay immediately after it begins playing, resulting in a shorter, "cut-off" sound. It creates a staccato-like, crisp sound impression.

6Decay

Set the time it takes for the sound to decay and disappear. Adjusts the length of the sound's reverberation.

Effect on Sound:

  • Increase the value: The time it takes for the sound to fade out becomes longer, resulting in extended reverberation and a slow fade-out effect. This creates a rich, soft impression.
  • Decrease the value: The sound fades out quickly, with short reverberation, producing a very tight and crisp sound. This gives a dry, focused impression.

7Drive

Set the amount of distortion applied to the sound.

Effect on Sound:

  • Increase the value: Distortion is added to the sound, increasing harmonics and transforming it into a rough, aggressive, thick, and powerful tone.
  • Decrease the value: The distortion is reduced, resulting in a clearer sound.

8Tone

Set the timbre (tone color) of the sound.

Effect on Sound:

  • Increase the value: The cutoff frequency becomes higher, resulting in a sharper and harder sound impression.
  • Decrease the value: The cutoff frequency becomes lower, resulting in a muffled and softer sound impression.

5. Set Management

You can save the setting information of the sound sources placed on the Create Set Screen as a set. Multiple sets can be created and saved, but multiple sets cannot be used simultaneously. The Set Screen has four functions: Create New, Duplicate, Delete, Select and Rename.

  • Sort by set name in descending order: Displays the set names in reverse order (A to Z).

  • Sort by set name in ascending order: Displays the set names in ascending order (Z to A).

  • Sort by set modification date in descending order: Newer sets are displayed at the top.

  • Sort by set modification date in ascending order: Older sets are displayed at the top.

  • Tap the Save button to save your Set.

  • From the list of Sets, tap the Set you want to select.

5Renaming a Set

  • To change the Set name, long-press it to bring up the on-screen keyboard.

6. Play a Playlist

Plays the sets created in Create Set according to the playback order configured in Playlist Management.

  • Preference button

    Displays the Preference where you can view in-app purchases, the privacy policy, and the terms of use.

  • Create Set button

    Go to the Create Set.

  • Playlist Parameter

    This section lets you configure shuffle settings: the number of times a Set repeats, the wait time between Sets, tempo changes, and the random order in which the sets will be played. To adjust these parameters, tap here to open the Shuffle Parameter Panel.

  • Playlist button

    Display the Playlist Management to select the sets and specify their playback order.

  • Playlist Play/Stop button

    Start and stop playlist playback.
    The sets selected in Playlist Management will be played in a loop in the specified order.

[Important] Recommended Setting for Uninterrupted Use

The app's operation may be interrupted by the iPhone's "Auto-Lock" feature. Please follow the steps below to adjust this setting.
  1. Open the Settings app from your iPhone's Home Screen.
  2. Tap on Display & Brightness.
  3. Tap on Auto-Lock.
  4. From the options that appear, select Never.

Editing is not available on the Play a Playlist Screen. Please use the Create Set to modify sound sources.

6-1 Playlist Parameter

1Repeat Count

Set the number of times a set is repeated.
If you set it to "2" as in the example, it will play one set twice, then the next set will play twice.

2Interval Time

Sets the waiting time (in seconds) between playing the last set registered in the playlist and playing the first set.

3Tempo

Adjust the tempo of the beat sound sources registered in the set between -50% and +100%. Setting a negative value increases the tempo, while a positive value decreases it.

4Random

When you turn the switch ON, it will disable the playback order of the set selected in Playlist Management and play the tracks in random order.

Example of operation steps: Speed up the tempo slightly and play 5 times at 30-second intervals.

  1. Set the "Repeat Count" value to "5".
  2. Set the "Interval" value to "30".
  3. Set the "Tempo" value to your preferred speed (e.g., +10%).
  4. Close the window by tapping the "×" button in the upper-right corner.
  5. Tap the "Start" button at the bottom-right of the screen to begin playback.

6-2 Playlist Management

A list of Sets created in the Create Set is displayed. You can select the set to be played in shuffle mode from here.

  • Set Selection Checkbox

    A check mark is displayed on the selected Set. Multiple sets can be selected.

  • Rearrange Button

    Drag the rearrange button to change the playback order. The sets with the "Set Selection Checkbox" checked will be played in order from the top of the list.

  • Back button

    Returns to the Play a Playlist.

In the case of this screen:
The sets will be played in the order of Default, Sharman-Drum, and SlowTempo. After SlowTempo finishes playing, it will return to the first set and play Default. MyFirstSet and 432Hz will not be played because their Set Selection Checkboxes are turned off.
If the playlist parameters are set to "Repeat 2" and "Interval 60," it will play in the order of Default, Default, Sharman-Drum, Sharman-Drum, SlowTempo, SlowTempo. After the second playback of SlowTempo finishes, it will wait for 60 seconds before returning to Default and continuing playback.

7. Preference

This screen allows you to upgrade to Defleckt Unlimited, set timers, and check the app's website and related information.

1How to use

2Language

You can choose the language from English or Japanese.

3Timer

Set the playback time of the sound source with the in-app timer. When the timer reaches the set time, the playback of the sound source stops. The timer can be set from 1 hour to 12 hours in one-hour increments.

The timer is only available after upgrading to Deflekt Unlimited.

  • Turn the timer function on or off.
  • Tap the timer field to enter the time using the on-screen keyboard.
  • Tap the minus button to decrease the timer duration, shortening the playback time. Hold the button to decrease the value more rapidly.
  • Move the slider thumb to adjust the timer duration. Dragging the thumb to the left decreases the time, while dragging it to the right increases the time.
  • Tap the plus button to increase the timer duration, extending the playback time. Hold the button to increase the value more rapidly.
  • Minimum timer duration that can be set.
  • Maximum timer duration that can be set.

4Upgrade to Deflekt Unlimited

Deflekt is a free app, but upgrading to Deflekt Unlimited via in-app purchase enhances its features. The differences between the free and paid versions are the continuous playback time and timer function. The free version has a continuous playback time of 5 minutes, while the paid version has no limit. The timer function is not available in the free version.

  • Purchase Button: Upgrade to Deflekt Unlimited. The payment method is non-consumable billing. Once purchased, it can be used permanently.
  • Restore Button: If you restore your iPhone from a backup or delete and reinstall the app, the purchase history of Deflekt Unlimited may be lost, and the timer and unlimited playback features may become unavailable. Tap the restore button to connect to Apple's server and check your purchase history. If the purchase history of Deflekt Unlimited is found, it will be restored.
